  9. Tadzhik, 4% Tatar language Uzbek religion
  10. Sunni Muslim history part of Turkestan, it
  11. was conquered by Russia 1865-76. The Tashkent
  12. soviet gradually extended its power 1917-24,
  13. and Uzbekistan became a constituent republic
  14. of the USSR 1925. Some 160,000 Mesketian
  15. Turks were forcibly transported from their
  16. native Georgia to Uzbekistan by Stalin 1944.
  17. In June 1989 Tashlak, Yaipan, and Fergana
  18. were the scenes of riots in which Mesketian
  19. Turks were attacked; 70 were killed and 850
  20. wounded. In Sept 1989 an Uzbek nationalist
  21. organization, the Birhik (`Unity') Peoples's
  22. Movement, was formed.
